Saturday, 7 July 2018 at 7.30 pm – Ashton Singers Summer Concert
The programme opens with 12th century convent music by Hildegard of Bingen, followed by a 16th century motet recently attributed to Ferrarese nun and composer Eleonora d’Este, child of the notorious Lucrezia Borgia (daughter of Pope Alexander VI).  A solo duet and a trio written for the virtuoso concerto di donne of the d’Este Court in Ferrara follow.  British 20th/21st century music forms the main part of the concert, including Britten’s ever popular Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard and his Cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, plus music by Mealor, Harvey and Dove.  Professor David Baker will accompany the choral items, as required, and play two lively organ solos: Sortie in E flat by Lefébure-Wély and an organ arrangement of Playful Pizzicato from Britten’s Simple Symphony.
Tickets: £15 from Jan Brook tel. 01962 714030,  jan.brook@brookfamily.org or from Winchester Cathedral Box Office tel. 01962 857275

Tuesday, 10 July 2018 at 8.00 pm – Winchester Festival Concert in the Church – Piatti Quartet
Saint Cross Church will resonate warmly to the ‘spirited and engaging’ playing of the Piatti Quartet, multiple prizewinners at the 2015 Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition. Their survey of string quartets covers the 18th to the 20th Centuries, ranging from Haydn’s early mastery of the form and the serene beauty of Ravel’s only quartet to the intensely felt emotions of Mendelssohn’s last major work, an elegy for his beloved sister.
